Ask A Nurse
Questions and Answers

Q. Is there anything as effective as an epidural for c-section?

A. Actually, if you are planning a cesarean, or your cesarean happens during labor, but before an epidural is placed, many anesthesiologist prefer the spinal anesthesia.

The spinal has different qualities than the epidural in that it takes effect much more quickly, you do not have the risks of hot spots or windows (areas that did not numb).

If you are having additional surgery during your cesarean they may elect to use a combined spinal epidural anesthesia.

Your best bet would be to have an anesthesia consult before your due date and see what they recommend for you, your birth and your body.
