CDC GBS Guidelines Aug. 25, 1995


Center for Disease Control recommendations:

1. Give intrapartum penicillin (5 million units IV:load the 2.5 million units every 4 hours until delivery) for all women with the following risk factors:

  • previous infant with GBS disease
  • GBS bacteriuria this pregnancy
  • GBS positive vag or rectal culture
  • delivery <37 wks
  • intrapartum temp >100.4
  • ROM >12 hours

    2. If none of the above risk factors apply; collect vaginal and rectal swab for GBS culture at 35-37 weeks for all pregnant women. If negative no treatment, if not done and no fever and ROM < 12 hours no treatment.
