Peytan's Birth

This is the story of my daughter, Peytan's birth. Peytan is my 3rd child. I was due on April 20, 1996, but that day came and went with no baby. My obstetritian was on vacation the week before I was due, so I had to see his partner at my OB checkup. He did an internal exam and said I hadn't dilated any and that he thought I would go over my due date. I wanted to tell him he was wrong, because my other 2 children were both born before their due dates, although it had been 7 years since I'd had a baby. I went in for my next weeks checkup and my doctor was back from vacation. I was 3 days overdue at this time. I asked him if he would so something to get this baby here, because I was already in my second week of maternity leave from work, and I told him I didn't want to spend my time waiting for a baby. He checked to see if I had dilated and I was at 2cm. He tried to get me to dilate more to bring on labor. He said if I hadn't gone into labor by Friday(it was Tuesday), to check in at the hospital early that morning and he would induce. Nothing happened, so we got to the hospital at 6:00 Friday morning and the nurses prepped me. They said my doctor was in surgery at another hospital, and that he wanted them to wait before they started the Pitocin, because he didn't think it would take long. He finally called about 10:00 and gave the nurses the go ahead. They started the drip about 10:30 and my contractions started at 10:45. My doctor got there at 11:00 and checked me. I was still at 2cm. I asked him for some pain medication for later and he said he would order some Demoral, but, he didn't think I would need it. He broke my water and the contractions almost immediately became stronger and closer together. By 12:00, I was begging for that Demoral. I didn't think it was working one bit, but my husband said it helped me sleep in between contractions. I was asking for it more often than they could give it to me. My nurse stayed by my bedside all day long and watched the monitor. When she went to lunch, another nurse stayed with me. I thought that was great. The Demoral made me very drousy, so I just remember bits and pieces. I remember at one point, they thought the baby had turned(breech), so they brought in an ultrasound to see. I was wanting to get it over with so I was hoping soooooooooo bad that she had because the nurse said if she had, he would probably do a C-section, but she hadn't, which I'm glad now. I remember seeing my doctor from time to time. I remember being told I was 8 cm. and I knew I could push at 10. I remember my doctor saying " Well, I think I have time to go see a couple of patients( his office was across the street) ". I remember thinking it's going to be awhile if he has time to go see patients, and I didn't think I could go on any longer. My husband said he never got to go see any patients, because I went to 10cm. just like that. During my whole pregnancy, I was worried that I would have a 9lb. baby and when her head crowned, my doctor said "Looks like a 9 pounder". Peytan Danielle Mayes was born at 5:27 p.m. on April 26, 1996 weighing 8 lbs. 5 oz. and 21 in. long. She will be 2 in a week and a half and talks like a little adult and is about potty-trained(exept for occasional accidents and night time diapers). She is spoiled rotten and a great joy.
