Joel Mathew's Birth
After 3yrs of trying for a child and years spent
with specialist and fertility clinics I finally found out I was pregnant
and just before I was due to start treatment too. On january 10th 1997
on my husbands 25th birthday the results came through that I was 6 weeks
pregnant. After a very sick and traumatic pregnancy on sunday 17th
August 1997 at 12.30pm my waters started to leak luckily we had been
organised as I was a little over 3 weeks early and my husband rang the
hospital and told them we were coming in as we still doubted if this was
for real as it was so mild and there was only slight pain. We were
admitted and told we were going to have a baby, it was very exciting we
took my bags to my room and gave the midwife our birthing plan and were
still fresh from our prenatal classes, I rang my sister and mother in
law who were also going to be my support people for the birth of our
precious son. After hours of walking the hall and breathing at about
3am and two hot showers I was only 3cms dilated. I was given petheidine
to take the edge off but it didn't work and I had a reaction to the drug
and could'nt stop shaking. I was then taken into out of the birthing
room into the emergency labor room and at around 6am administered an
epidural , finally I was told that it would be soon and that I was 7cms
dilated.
My gynecologist arrived at 8am after being told that it was
going slow and my blood pressure was low and my body wes going into
shock he examined me and found that that Joel was floating and had
failed to descend, I was prepped and whisked into theatre for an
emergency cesarean and our beautiful boy was born 24.5 hrs later on 18th
August 1997 at 12.47pm, only weighing 6lb 4oz
and his lenght was 46.5cms after a few days on a glucose drip he picked
up and all is now well. A month later I was given a pelvic scan that
revealed the shape of my pelvis will prevent me from ever having a
vaginal birth I was very dissappointed but thankful that I was given the
chance to have a child. Here is a photo of Joel at two months old he is
still very small but is catching up.
